Class Description
Welcome to our new website for 7th grade ELA. As this year progresses, my role is to help you build more skills in reading and writing, and to develop solid work habits (I am improving, too). That said, I invite all of you to add your input as you see areas that may be improved.
My number one goal is to create a community of learners. You all are wonderfully diverse readers, thinkers and writers. I have learned many new ways of perceiving the world through you and look forward to more months of learning beside you.
Schedule
On this website, you will find the daily/weekly agenda, resources, and any homework assignments posted. Please make a habit of looking at it each day, even if you are absent.

Grading
My grading philosophy is that grades should be used to communicate student progress towards mastery of the goals of our class. Throughout the year, we will use rubrics, conferences and goal setting among other tools to assess the following criteria both formally and informally. You will earn your grade based on:

You must bring these with you everyday...
Consequences for not coming prepped for class are discussed in class. There is a protocol in place for this and missed homework (and I am flexible, esp. due to illnesses).

- Independent Reading: You will be required to read independently and follow our independent assignments.
- Class reading: We will read short fiction, non-fiction, novels, plays and poems.
- In class, we will work towards becoming more strategic readers, guided by the Common Core State Standards (on website).

- You will have the opportunity to complete many short research projects on topics pertaining to our units of study.
- Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary: We will establish specific goals as a class, in groups and individually as we work toward meeting or exceeding grade 7 standards.
Grading
My grading philosophy is that grades should be used to communicate student progress towards mastery of the goals of our class. Throughout the year, we will use rubrics, conferences and goal setting among other tools to assess the following criteria both formally and informally. You will earn your grade based on:
- Performance/Product: Did you meet or exceed the 7th grade standard in specific assignments and units of study?
- Process: Do you demonstrate solid habits of mind? Do you set goals, ask for help, persist when tasks become challenging, self correct? Are you working to be organized and punctual?
- Progress: Given where you started, how far have you come?
Materials
You must bring these with you everyday...

- Your Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook (Binder)
- Your independent reading book and/or your class novel
- Your charged i-Pad!!

Consequences for not coming prepped for class are discussed in class. There is a protocol in place for this and missed homework (and I am flexible, esp. due to illnesses).
